Professor James Mohr

Our guest today is James C. Mohr, author of Licensed to Practice: the Supreme Court Defines the American Medical Profession.  Prior to his retirement in 2018 he was College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor of History and Philip H. Knight Professor of Social Sciences at the University of Oregon.  In addition to the book we will be discussing today, Mohr has also written several others related to the social history of medicine in the United States, including Abortion in America: the Origins and Evolution of National Policy, 1800-1900; Doctors and the Law: Medical Jurisprudence in Nineteenth-Century America, and Plague and Fire: Battling Black Death and the 1900 Burning of Honolulu’s Chinatown, which won the Oregon Book Award.  His scholarly articles have appeared in a host of historical journals as well as JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association.  He has served on the editorial board of many scholarly journals; he has held several prestigious fellowships, including Guggenheim, NEH, and Rockefeller Foundation grants; and he has testified twice before the United States Senate as an expert witness on the history of health-related issues.
