And it's going to continue to change, and it should change. Healthcare has been this giant behemoth which is 10-20 years behind every other industry. So what is changing for my clients is how to thrive and enjoy what they do in a way that their headaches are minimized. So it is difficult just to learn the art of medicine, the art of surgery it takes, I would say, it takes decades to learn that skill. And you never stop learning, you're always getting better and better. That's already two jobs, okay? But, in terms of being able to navigate this changing landscape with government regulation, new employment relationships, what the internet is doing in terms of disrupting the doctor-patient relationship, electronic medical records... I could go on and on. This is a scary time to be a doctor. It's also an amazingly exciting time to be a doctor. All reviews go up; the good, the neutral, and yes, the bad. Now, we can help craft a response to the bad reviews, but these bad reviews are part of the learning experience and they also maintain an element of integrity to the system. So some doctors have said, well, is there any way that I can not have any reviews get uploaded. Let's just gather them for a period of time so I can get a better feel because I'm really concerned that there will be open forum for all of the angry patients to come out. And I said, look, you have to trust me on this. I've been doing this long enough. If you're doing a great job, the vast majority of reviews that come through will actually be positive. But they don't know that. I know that, but they don't know that. So we will hold reviews for a month sometimes just to get the doctor comfortable that their patients are reflecting in writing what, we believe in our hearts, a talented practitioner has earned. In an attempt to prove believers wrong, he set out on a research project that surprised even him. Video Transcript Are reviews valuable and can people use reviews on the Internet to find a great doctor? I was a skeptic, I was a public skeptic about the value of reviews. I went out of my way to demonstrate just how valueless reviews on the Internet were. So how did I do that? I got a list of the best and worst doctors for things that mattered the most which would be patient safety or "don't kill me" and clinical outcomes or "make me better." And so I had a list of the best and the worst surgeons in those two categories because I would think that that's what I would be looking for in terms of a practitioner. I mean it would be nice to have great bedside manner, good communication skills, great parking, ease of scheduling, all that is nice to have but the must have is patient safety and clinical outcomes. So I got this giant list of the best and the worst surgeons, but I didn't know which was which. I was blinded as to the identities. And then I had some interns go to the Internet and scour page one of a Google search for reviews; what was the online reputation of each of these doctors like. We went to Health Grades, we went to Vitals, we went to Google and so on and so forth. And then when we unblinded the information it turned out that the best surgeons had the best online reputations. The worst surgeons had the worst online reputations. My assumption was completely wrong. That reviews and online reputation do matter and they are a very useful signal in terms of how to find the better doctor. That was the epiphany in terms of establishing e-Merit. If reviews online are helpful to give patients actionable information, why should a doctor be defined by two angry patients with a megaphone? Shouldn't they be defined by hundreds of patients since the average doctor sees several thousand patients a year? The answer of course, is yes.
